Did you know that most scientific calculators, including the TI-84, come with equation solvers?
You can find one in the TI-84 by going to the Math menu and scrolling to the bottom of the list of options.
If you need help figuring out what to do, you can find step-by-step instructions at the TI-84's For Dummies site. The image below, taken from that site, uses the equation solver to find the value of x if 2(3 – x) = 4x – 7.
You can also solve the system y = 2(3 – x) and y = 4x – 7 by graphing and finding the intersection point. I personally find the equation solver to be much easier, but both methods keep you from having to do a lot of tedious algebra, and neither requires you to show as much work as if you had to solve by hand.
If you ask your teacher and he is OK with graphing (and therefore showing less work), then the equation solver should be okay too.
